“Violet, you must live on and be free. From the bottom of my heart… I love you.”
In search of the meaning of a dear one’s “I love you”, the story of a young girl named Violet Evergarden embarks on. Throughout every episode of the anime, she learns about different meanings of the word “Love” but all resulting in the same kind of emotions. Thus, her journey as a ghostwriter transformed her from being emotionless mechanical doll to a fine understanding lady.
‘Violet Evergarden’ is a Japanese light novel series written by Kana Akatsuki and
illustrated by Akiko Takase. It was adapted as an anime by Kyoto Animation under their KA Esuma Bunko imprint, from December 2015 to
March 2020.

The story follows a young ex-soldier named Violet
who’s writing a report to ‘Major Gilbert’ after the war while recovering at the
hospital. Little does she know, the major who poses as her only family is
nowhere to be found. Then comes the bestfriend of the major, Claudia Hodgins to
take care of Violet as he promised to his assumably deceased friend. When
Violet asks him about Gilbert, seeing her state he decides to keep quiet about
it. After that, he introduces her to the “Evergarden” family as her guarantor
but she refuses to be pampered. This results in her being an employee at CH postal
company to deliver letters.

At first, she had problem understanding the unspoken
feelings of a human since she never experienced anything like that in life. She
was so void of such sentiments that she didn’t even do anything without orders.
One day while doing chores in the office, she witnesses how the Auto-memoir
doll (ghostwriters in Leyden) can understand the hidden feelings of a person
just by the few words they share. As a result, it fumes the flame in her heart
and for the first time in life she decides to do something for herself which assigns
her to write letters that can connect people. Getting used to the new metallic
prosthetic hands and encountering life-changing things surrounded by the
warm-hearted people around her, Violet becomes an extra-ordinary ‘Auto-memoir
doll’. She eventually gets asked to write a letter not only all over Leiden but
also the neighboring countries.

The reason how Violet was in such a condition takes you back to four years ago from the original timeline. When Gilbert Bougainvillea got promoted as major in the army, his older brother Dietfried Bougainvillea who worked in the navy gave him a special weapon as a gift. As soon as he opened the trunk, he saw an innocent teenage girl. His brother mentioned he found the abundant nameless child in the northeastern front during the war mercilessly killing other soldiers who attempted to molest her. For some reasons she obeyed him and he took her back to his place. It’s rather strange to think about why exactly Dietfried gave her to Gilbert instead of handling her himself. Maybe either he wanted to keep his brother safe with a bodyguard beside him during the wartime judging by her combat prowess or secretly knew Gilbert is the perfect kind person to show Violet how to live like a normal human being.

I absolutely loved how all the characters helped Violet to grow up with their warmth. Starting From Claudia who literally acted as her father figure; Cattleya, Erica and Iris always having her back like a good friend; Benedict being an over-protective brother, even Dietfried who blamed Violet for his brother’s death secretly caring for her make the surrounding appropriate to live as a young-adult girl should. Gilbert never wanted a child like her to go to war or kill people, so he always tried his best to refrain her from it. To be honest, it was extremely clever of the author to use flower as a symbolism in the names of the characters to describe each of their personalities.
Not to mention, the amazing artwork of the anime
stole my heart. The visuals of the background sceneries, the expressions of the
characters were so mesmerizing to watch. Hats off to the animators to create
atmospheres too beautiful to unsee. Moreover, the voice-actors took my every breath
away. The way they could express the tiniest lump when crying or the little
giggling while a good moment occurred brought the characters to life. It felt
so real that I already immersed myself into the characters.
